Layers and Filters

Here's a simple project that shows some effects you can get with a few simple layer and filter steps. We'll make a rocky-looking background and put a shape on it that looks worn.

Step 1

Create a new document:

Step 2

Set the foreground and background colors as shown:

Now go to Filter-->Render-->Clouds:

Step 3

Go to Filter-->Texture-->Craquelure and choose these settings:

Now go to Filter-->Artistic-->Rough Pastels and use these settings:

Step 4

Go to Layer-->Layer Style and set like this:

Create a new layer, then get the Custom Shape tool and select the cat paw:

Now rotate it slightly to the left:

Step 6

Go to Layer-->Layer Style and use these settings:

Set layer fill to zero:

Now let's go to Filter-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and use these settings:

Your final result should look like this:

Of course, you can use these steps to create any number of images, changing shapes, colors, etc.
