introduction:
In this somewhat abstract tutorial, we'll show you how to create an exploding arc.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 1
Create a new canvas, I chose 600x600. With a black background. Create a new layer, call it 'Arc' select your elliptic marquee tool, create a large circle on the bottom left corner of your canvas, roughly 1/2 into the canvas. Fill it white.

step 2
Keep the circle selected, if you lose the selection go to Select > Load Selection. Go to Select > Modify > Contract. I contracted by 25px. Press delete.

step 3
We need to cutout sections of the arc now, take your polygonal lasoo tool, and make a selection such as the following.

step 4
Again, press delete, after cutting out your first segment, right click your selection box, and go to Transform Selection. Continually rotate your selection and cut out segments until you have something like the following.

step 5
Bring up the 'Arc' layer properties. Go to outer glow and apply the following. On this new layer, take a round soft brush, I took 35px. Create a spot at the bottom of your arc. You want to make sure your Explosion Layer is above your Arc Layer in the layers pallette.

step 6
Create a new layer, call it Explosion.
