Learn to create a signboard "Welcome to Silent Hill" (or wherever you want) in horror movies style.
Let’s start with creating a new document, with 400px by 400px with a transparent background:

Create this gradient, with colors from #000000 to #aea27d. Observe that the gradient is not equal, the black pat is bigger:

Now, create a new layer and in the tool palette set the foreground color to #d6c795 and background color to #444444:

Go to menu Filter > Render > Clouds. That is how your picture must look like:

Now, add layer mask to our layer with clouds:

Select a gradient tool with a white-to-black gradient and drag it in the mask from very top of the document to the bottom. So only half of the clouds remained visible:

Now, create a new layer. With a Rectangular Marquee Tool make a selection area about 250x20 px and fill it with a # c8bd97 color. That is going to be a board:

Duplicate this layer four times to make five boards:

Now, select first board by Ctrl+click on a layer icon in a layer palette (F7), go to menu Filter > Noise > Add noise, and add noise with a following settings:

Go to menu Filter > Blur > Motion blur, and add this filter with a following settings:

First board is almost ready:

Press Ctrl+D to deselect, and repeat this two filters to other boards:

Now apply to each boar this Bevel and Emboss effect:

That is how they must look now:

Now, to make our boards look more realistic, add to each board filter Sharpen (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen) two times! Two times – not just once! :). They must look like this:

Now one by one, go to Edit > Transform > Rotate, and rotate a little bit each board in different directions as it is shown:

Using Rectangular Shape Tool – draw two rectangular shapes as it is shown below. I’ve used black color, but it doesn’t matter which one you will use:

Apply to each of our shapes this gradient:

That is how it must look like:

Now, select each of our board levels and merge them into one (Layer > Merge Layers). After that, create a new layer and write “Welcome to Silent Hill” with a #770f07 color.

Rasterize our text layer, than marquee our boards layer, go to menu Select > Inverse, to invert the selection. Make sure that the text layer is active, and press Delete – to clear superfluous text.

Now, go to our background layer. Apply to it - menu Filter > Render > Lighting Effects, with this settings:

That is what we must get by now.

Now from a Tool Pallete – take a Burn Tool with a following settings:

And apply it to the places where it is shown:

Now, merge our two rectangular shapes, go to Filter > Brush strokes > Spatter, with a following settings:

Voila! The scary (or not too scary :)) picture is ready!

okay, well done, but no offense, its not exactly good, in fact its really bad, i respect you for making the effort and maybe there are some people out there that will find this help full for some reason, but its not scary, the background was porly done, and the text is just red, it has no effects to make it look more real.
However, it was a good attempt so well done, also on your next one dont use them white lines and text to indicate things, makes it look un-pro.
ok, thanks for advice. :)
I think it was really neat, I've always wanted to know how to make something like that...thank you for posting it. Anyone that's going to leave an ugly comment like the one before should check for typos before being so critical :)
I suggest lining up your boards and placing your text on them first. Then break up your text and link the layers to the board layer, this way when you angle your boards like you have your text will move with it instead of just being placed over and perfectly straight. Gotta think realism.
On top of what the poster before said, about breaking up the text, the lettering is far too flat. If your letters were really on the boards, there'd be some of the texture from behind them that came through to the front.
Also, just from a personal opinion, the scene is far too bright to be scary. ^_-
I think your idea was great but have a suggestion to make it a little better. Keep the boards straight to start with (like previously mentioned) and add your text layer. Then make a copy of the text layer for each board that you have. Drag a copy of the text until it's above the board layer and repeat until you have a text layer, board, text, board, etc. Then you can delete the extra text from the layer that goes along with each board. After you have done that, then merge each text layer with the board below it and then you can do your board rotating. This will not only rotate your board, but your letters as well. Hope it helps!
thank you all, i will take notice of your advices for a future tutorials :)
This is a very basic tutorial, but with some creative texture and brush work on the Photoshopper's part, you can do some cooler things with it, such as using a grunge brush to create blood splatters or a textured bevel + emboss to add more realism to the poles.
the tutorial was gr8, i chose a spooky font to make the board more scary and also added a blury full moon on the top corner giving a full moon scarry night. Nice job though....gr8 work
to get the texture of the boards to show through the text, have the text layer highlighted and bring up the blending options under the layer style palate. At the bottom there are two sliders, using the "underlying layer" slider, play around with the black and white arrows. you can also split each of the arrows to make a smoother transition by holding down the option key (on a mac, not sure on a pc) and click-dragging on the arrow.
all this was b/s learn to meake them like me kkk
This is a very poor tutorial.. I dont think its able to scare the shit out of anyone..
AND, i hope you didnt lift this tutorial from other websites.. cos when i tried "Googling", a list of websites offered the same tutorial.
Such harsh criticism and you're just trying to generously share what you know with others. It's very unfortunate that people are so rude. There are so many know-it-alls on the net. I for one appreciate your tutorial and find it useful. Thanks!
