Im going to show you how I paint a portrait. They are not really steps though. While I was painting this, I saved the progress in pictures. Hopefully, you can see and learn how to paint a portrait, landscape, or still life by doing the same thing I do.
Just remember that when you begin to paint a picture, less is more. Start with three or four of the major colors and block them in. After that, you can start adding detail.
You can paint whatever, just find a picture or paint from your imagination, or set up a still life, it doesnt matter.
Im going to paint a portrait of my hero, Albert Einstein.

Albert Einstein

Start by finding the three or four major colors of the picture. example-lets say you're drawing a tree, put in the blue for the sky, brown for the trunk, green for the grass, etc etc. Just three or four colors at first so you can see the shapes of what your painting.

I'll still put many hours into this painting before Im done. when I'm done with it, I'll post it at various art sites, so thats why I'm going to put a lot more work into it. This tutorial was to give you an idea on how to start to paint a portrait and add detail it.

I just took screengrabs while I was painting it, and I used a wacom tablet, not a mouse.. The pics should all be up there.

meh...Im done with it. I unknowingly resized the photoshop file and saved it, and I cant really add detail to a smaller sized picture. Oh well. Maybe I'll start a new one.
