With the rectangular marquee tool (M) make a rectagular as showed here....

At the botton of the layer palette, click at the ball half white/half black--->choose levels.

step 4

Click at the levels windows on OPTIONS ....
Click OK at color correction options and after OK at levels....

step 5

Now with shift key click at the layer (levels) mask....
