History Brush for Dust and Scratches

A great use of the History Brush is to remove dust and scratches from a photo.
Let's use this extreme case to show the technique.
Run the Dust and Scratches filter Filter > Noise >Dust and Scratches. Start with the Threshold at 2 levels and increase the radius until all the dust and scratches are gone (I went up to 6 pixels).
You now have removed the dust and scratches, but have a very blurry picture.
Open your History Palette, and, at the bottom, click on the camera which will take a snapshot of the blurry, dustless image. The snapshot appears at the top of the history palette under the original state and is called Snapshot 1.
Undo Dust and Scratches (command Z), and you return to the original image. Go up to your snapshot and click in the box to the left. The History Brush symbol should appear in the box.
Select the History Brush in the tool Bar, and select the "Lighten" mode.
Now when you paint with the history brush, you will be replacing the pixels in the current image with the pixels from your snapshot. Since you've selected "Lighten", it will only replace a pixel if the new pixel is lighter than the current pixel. Start painting out the dust and scratches. Be careful not to get too close to areas you don't want to get blurry like around the eyes and mouths.
Voila! There you have it! You can use the heal tool to clean up any marks that still show.
If you have a dark photo with light dust and scratches, do the same thing except choose Darken as the mode for the History Brush.
