Hi Alistair... best to just show what was done on this image, the "base" BG is on the bottom right, the finished image top left and all the other BG's I layered and changed colors in between...you can see the original sketch of the "little man" with th BG taken out in the bottom left, as you can see...these are pretty rough ...but bits og the "backgrounds" some times come through to give the image texture!
Hope this answer's your question Alistair...!

What do you mean when you say backgrounds, I normally throw up a gradient of some kind and take it from there, it usually gets lost before the end of the painting but I find it better than using a flat colour or a blank canvas.

...hi guy's thanks for yout comments.... encee, if you noticed a few posts back, you mentioned one image was too monochromatic...the recent ones are more colorfull, thanks fro the comment!
First, about the "sketch" if you blow these things up they aer really quite rough, and yes all of this is totally painted,
and this one took just over a couple hours, Ihave a bunch or different backgrounds I have done on file, so I will just pull one out at random or do a quick one, I opened up this BG last night and just sketched the little guy standing on some tiles...the rest came from that, I thought of the subway in American Werewolf in London and End of Days, and usually when I am just sketching I dont use reference, just make it up. on a more finished piece for a vid i will use more picture reference, I and it takes longer, obviously...but Im not working on anything right now, I am avout to Direct a few commercials so these are just fun and practice....hope I answered your question...and thank you!

Macdon: As a matter of personal-interest, how long does something like this take you ? It really is outstanding, and if it`s only a "sketch" that you did when you got in from a party, I can only imagine the quality you are turning out if it`s for a client, or something you are being paid for. Given you a 10, mate.
